Jordan ranks 102 out of 191 countries on UNDP Human Development Index

AMMAN — Jordan ranked 102nd on the 2021-2022 Human Development Index, according to a report released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Thursday.
Jordan’s Human Development Index (HDI) value of 0.720 places the Kingdom in the High Human Development category, according to the report, which covered 191 countries.

In 2020, Jordan ranked 102nd, according to the Human Development Report 2020.
Switzerland ranked first, followed by Norway, and Iceland.
As for countries in the Arab region, the UAE ranked 26th, Bahrain 35th, and Saudi Arabia 35th.
On the Gender Inequality Index, Jordan ranks 102nd, with a score of 0.471.

As for the Gender Development Index, the Kingdom stood at 102nd with a score of 0.887.
Multiple crises can halt progress as nine out of 10 countries will fall backwards in terms of human development, the report warned. 


The latest Human Development Report, “Uncertain Times, Unsettled Lives: Shaping our Future in a Transforming World”, indicates that “layers of uncertainty are stacking up and interacting to unsettle life in unprecedented ways”.


“The last two years have had a devastating impact for billions of people around the world, when crises like COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine hit back-to-back, and interacted with sweeping social and economic shifts, dangerous planetary changes, and massive increases in polarisation,” the report said. 

“For the first time in the 32 years that UNDP have been calculating it, the Human Development Index, which measures a nation’s health, education, and standard of living, has declined globally for two years in a row,” read the report.
Human development has fallen back to its 2016 levels, with over 90 per cent of countries registering a decline in HDI score in either 2020 or 2021, said the report.
