AMMAN — Deputising for His Majesty King Abdullah, Minister of Industry, Trade, Supply, and Labour Yousef Shamali on Tuesday opened the Jordan International Food Exhibition, or “Jordan Food”.

Organised by the International Promoters Company for Marketing and Exhibitions (IPCO) and held at the Jordan International Exhibition and Conference Centre in Mecca Mall, Jordan Food is the largest food exhibition in the Kingdom, covering an area of 11,000 square metres, and featuring the participation of 100 local and international companies in its sixth edition, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

President of the Jordan and Amman Chambers of Industry Fathi Jaghbir emphasised the importance of the Jordan Food International Exhibition in promoting national products and highlighting their high quality, which increases the confidence of Jordanian consumers in the domestic food industry.

He also noted that the food industry plays a vital role in supporting and stabilising the Kingdom’s food security system, with some food items achieving self-sufficiency, such as dairy products, table eggs and chicken.

He further pointed out that most local factories meet international requirements for food quality and safety, which are essential steps for entering international and regional markets, adding that a number of food factories have obtained US export accreditation through the US Food and Drug Administration.

There are 2,800 establishments operating in the food sector with a capital of JD660 million and employing more than 50,000 workers, while the sector’s JD558 million exports accounted for 9 per cent of the Kingdom’s total exports last year.

The organisers said that the exhibition runs for five days and opens daily from 2pm to 9pm, featuring a variety of activities, such as cooking demonstrations by 10 local and international chefs, food tastings, prize giveaways and numerous entertainment events.
