Jordan hails UK's suspension of arms exports to Israel

AMMAN — Jordan on Tuesday hailed the UK's decision to suspend export of weapons to Israel, particularly those used in the ongoing aggression against Gaza.

A Foreign Ministry statement described the move as a "crucial step" towards protecting civilians in the midst of the attack.

Sufian Qudah, the ministry's spokesperson, said that the UK's decision is in line with international resolutions adopted by the United Nations Security Council, General Assembly and International Court of Justice, as well as all related resolutions that have called for a ceasefire in Gaza and emphasised the importance of ensuring continued and sustained aid to all areas of Gaza.

The UK's decision is in line with ongoing diplomatic efforts by the United States, Qatar and Egypt to achieve a durable ceasefire and ensure the delivery of adequate humanitarian aid to Gaza, Qudah added.

He called for expanding the UK's decision and called for a comprehensive arms embargo on Israel, warning that without imposing "genuine" [sanctions] on Israel, it will continue with its military operations against Gaza and the West Bank and violation of international law.

The official also reiterated Jordan's unwavering support for the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights, mainly an independent state of their own.

Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi wrote on X platform, "The UK did right to suspend some arms exports licenses to Israel. We urge an expansion of this suspension and call on all countries to impose a complete arms embargo on Israel. Unless consequences are real, Netanyahu will not end his aggression on Gaza and the West Bank, and will not stop violating international law and threatening the security of the whole region."

Britain said Monday it would suspend some arms exports to Israel, citing a "clear risk" that they could be used in a serious breach of international humanitarian law.

The announcement follows a review by the foreign ministry into the arms sales given concerns about Israel's conduct of its war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, AFP reported.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy told parliament that the UK would suspend 30 out of 350 arms exports licences to Israel.

He said the partial ban covered items "which could be used in the current conflict in Gaza", including fighter aircraft, helicopters and drones.

Last week, the UK foreign ministry said it was "deeply" concerned by an Israeli military operation in the occupied West Bank, urging it to "exercise restraint" and adhere to international law.
