DEAD SEA — Jordan would abide by the Arab Charter regarding the attendance of the Arab summit, Minister of State for Media Affairs Mohammad Momani said Sunday.
His remarks came in response to a call by Human Rights Watch (HRW) calling on Jordan to deny entry to Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir or arrest him if he enters the country.
Bashir has been invited to visit Jordan on March 29, 2017, to attend the 28th summit of the Arab League.
"Jordan is a founding member of the Arab League and is completely committed to its charter, which clearly mentions Sudan's membership in the league. Therefore, Sudan must attend Arab summits in light of the league's charter," Momani said.
Bashir has been a fugitive from the International Criminal Court (ICC) since 2009. He is the subject of two ICC arrest warrants, issued in 2009 and 2010, related to his alleged role in Sudan’s abusive counterinsurgency campaign in Darfur. The charges are for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
However, Momani, who is also the government spokesperson did not confirm that the president was coming, adding that the details regarding the attendance of Arab leaders will be announced “later once confirmed”.
