Jordan celebrates World Wetlands Day

AMMAN — Jordan on Sunday joined the global community to celebrate World Wetlands Day, which falls on February 2nd each year and aims to highlight the important role that wetlands play as natural solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation, according to a statement from the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN).

The international day also corresponds to the adoption of the Ramsar Agreement, an international agreement signed on February 2, 1971 to protect biodiversity in wetlands. Jordan signed the agreement in 1977 as the first Arab country to do so. In Jordan, there are a number of wetlands that bear special importance, including the Fifa Nature Reserve and the Azraq Wetland Reserve, which the RSCN announced in 2019 had joined the Green List of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

The Fifa reserve has global acclaim as the lowest wetland on Earth. It was also listed par excellence on the Ramsar Agreement’s list of wetlands with international importance.
