AMMAN — The reopening of the Jaber border crossing has had “positive outcomes on all sectors” from transport to trade, industrial to agriculture, according to Mohammad Al Daoud, head of the Jordanian Truck Owners Syndicate.

According to Daoud, reopening the Jaber crossing between Syria and Jordan a month ago led to “a significant increase” in the number of trucks coming and going between the countries.

“The number of trucks crossing from Jaber crossing directly to and from Syria can reaches around 200 trucks per day,” he told The Jordan Times over the phone.

There has been an increase in the exports  and imports between the countries, as a result of the improvement in the loading operations and the exchange of goods, Daoud said.

He expressed hope that there will be better numbers in the future.

“The current number only makes up for a small percentage of the trucks that have stopped operating since the start of the pandemic, we are looking forward to a better outcome,” he said.

Daoud demanded that the diesel tax imposed on trucks in both Jordan and Syria be cancelled as it has become a concern for truck drivers who currently have to pay $80 in tax.

He added that all truck drivers going through the Jaber crossing have received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine and expressed his hope to expand transport and trade between Jordan and Syria in the near future.
