AMMAN — Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday stressed the importance of Jordan's role in finding a political solution to the Syrian crisis, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The remarks came during a meeting with Lower House Speaker Atef Tarawaneh in Tehran, in which the lawmaker conveyed His Majesty King Abdullah's greetings to Rouhani.
The Iranian leader said that Jordan and Iran share proximity to Iraq and Syria, which poses various security concerns, noting the importance of coordination to find solutions to the region's conflicts.
The president called on regional countries to support the Syrian and Iraqi governments in their war against terrorism and to contribute to political solutions that enable peoples to determine their futures.
On the Palestinian cause, Rouhani said that Tehran understands the burden Jordan shoulders as a result of Israeli ongoing violations against the holy places in Jerusalem, which are under the Hashemite custodianship.
He called for enhancing bilateral relation between the two countries, especially in political and economic fields.
For his part, Tarawneh stressed that better relations between Amman and Tehran serve the region’s stability, noting that the Syrian crisis was complicated by foreign interventions.
Tarawneh said that the Palestinian issue is a priority to Jordan, underlining the King’s efforts to solve the issue on the basis of the two-state solution that should lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The speaker said that Jordan is leading the “battle” to prevent the relocation of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
As for terrorism, Tarawneh said that Jordan seeks bridging the gaps between Muslim sects to unify the fight against terror organisations and to protect Islam’s image against distortion.
The lawmaker called for an Iranian role in supporting the Iraqi national reconciliation, which should end in restoring peace and stability and enhancing the war against terrorism.
Regarding Syria, he stressed the importance of supporting the political efforts to solve the crisis and to preserve Syrian territorial integrity.
Also on Wednesday, Tarawneh met with the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran Ali Larijani.
During the meeting, Tarawneh said that the Palestinian issue is the core conflict in the region.
Larijani stressed the importance of Jordan’s participation in the 6th International Conference in Support of the Palestinian Intifada.
