Int’l NGO to host conference on climate change’s impacts on Jordan’s health sector

AMMAN — Jordan Health Aid Society International (JHASi) will host an international conference titled “Climate Change’s Impacts on Jordan’s Health Sector”, at the Landmark Hotel on the coming Tuesday, to discuss public health, health economics, cooperation and stability in the MENA region.

The current literature indicates that climate change has had adverse impacts on Jordan’s health sector and predicts that the burden on healthcare staff will worsen as hospital admissions and disease transmissions increase, according to a JHASi statement. 

JHASi is seeking recommendations to address the impacts of climate change on the health sector. Diplomats, ministry representatives, non-governmental leaders, companies, professors and students will convene at the conference to discuss strategies for mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change, the statement read. 

On the topic of public health, participants will focus on the projected burden of increased global disease transmission on hospitals and hospital staff. 

Meanwhile, on the topic of health economics, participants will examine the regional health sector’s available funding and its financial readiness and economic capacity to handle the higher costs associated with increased hospital admissions, as well as the resulting hospital and medical staffing needs. 

Due to the cross-border impact of climate change, the conference’s third focus, “security, stability and cooperation”, will concentrate on the necessity of the international community and governmental and non-governmental leaders to cooperate in the interest of regional peace and stability, particularly given that climate emergencies affect security. 

Also during the event, Jordanian and international volunteers will debut the new initiative, “Goodwill Ambassadors SDG 13”, to create a forum for young people to discuss climate change and its negative impacts on youth.
