International Day of Solidarity affirms Palestinians' right to statehood

AMMAN — The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which is annually celebrated on November 29, represents a "human awakening" to the crimes of the Israeli occupation and the suffering of a besieged people, Secretary General of the Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs Abdullah Kanaan said on Sunday.

Kanaan added that the Palestinian people have suffered for decades under apartheid and an occupation that must come to an end, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

He referred to the occasion as part of an ongoing effort to protect the Palestinian people and their rights, calling on all of humanity to increase support for Palestine on this day of solidarity and beyond to achieve peace.

The secretary general described the Israeli government as dominated by right-wing politicians who "race to kill large numbers of Palestinians and encourage extremists to raid Al Aqsa Mosque."

Kanaan called on international powers that "pretend at democracy" to shun double standards and bias towards Israel, adding that true solidarity with the Palestinian people means global attention to their right to statehood.

Recognising the significance of the Palestinian cause and Jerusalem, which has been the subject of hundreds of international peace and security resolutions, the UN General Assembly in 1977 commemorated November 29 as the annual International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.  

Choosing this day is chronologically related to the date of issuing the partition resolution 1947/181, and marking the day on this date is an affirmation for Palestinians' right to justice, including their right to self-determination and establishing their own state as per international legitimacy resolutions.
