‘Int’l funding campaign helped reduce UNRWA’s $446m deficit to $200m’

AMMAN — UNRWA spokesperson Sami Mshasha on Wednesday commended the decision of the UNRWA’s General Presidency and Field Office in Jordan to suspend the open-ended strike, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Mshasha stressed on UNRWA’s respect to the labour unions inside the agency, highlighting that the general commissioner “completely understands” the economic pressures from which many workers are suffering at the time when the agency is financially “struggling” to continue providing its “vital services” to more than 5 million Palestinian and Syrian refugees.

He noted that the agency’s fiscal deficit amounted to $446 million at the beginning of the year, and was reduced to $200 million following an international funding campaign.

The spokesperson said that the UNRWA has “worked hard” to enhance the work conditions of its workers emanating from its belief in the “vitality” of their role.
