AMMAN – The consumer price index (CPI), a measurement of inflation, rose by 2.8 per cent in 2014 compared to 2013, according to the Department of Statistics (DoS).
The rate came in conformity with projections made by the government and the International Monetary Fund, which estimated inflation to be less than 3 per cent by the end of 2014.
The official report, released by DoS Tuesday, said that the rise in inflation was attributed mainly to higher rentals that went up by 6.9 per cent, tobacco and cigarettes by 13.9 per cent, clothes by 9.9 per cent, education by 4.5 per cent and medical care by 6.9 per cent.
DoS indicated that the increase in several commodity prices was coupled with a drop in the prices of vegetables by 2.8 per cent, fuel and power by 0.8 per cent, dairy products and personal care by 0.2 per cent and 0.3 per cent respectively.
