AMMAN — Exports of the industrial sector in 2021 exceeded JD5.6 billion despite the COVID-19 pandemic, statistics of the Jordan Chamber of Industry (JCI) showed on Sunday.

JCI President Fathi Jaghbir said that the industrial sector in 2021 achieved "unprecedented levels" and grew by 20 per cent compared with 2020, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Jaghbir said that industrial sector managed to prove its ability to adapt with prevailing conditions and look for alternatives to proceed with the production process and achieve further growth and prosperity, which made industrial exports maintain its share of the total national exports of 93 per cent.

Industrial exports reached this level due to the increase in total exports of the chemical, cosmetics, mining, leather, embroidery and construction sectors by JD956 million.

He said that the JCI is about to participate in preparing the national export strategy implemented by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply in cooperation with stakeholders of the private sector to increase the diversity of commodities and geographical areas of the national exports and utilise untapped export opportunities in the industrial sector that amount to $4.4 billion.

The JCI president stressed that utilising these opportunities would reduce the Kingdom's trade balance deficit that exceeded JD8 billion in 2021, provide more jobs for Jordanians and enhance foreign currency reserves at the Treasury.
