AMMAN — The Lower House’s Public Freedoms and Human Rights Committee on Sunday discussed a number of issues including house arrest, administrative detention and tribal “jalwa” (forced relocation).
The head of the committee, Awwad Zawaideh, said that the panel had held several meetings on the topics of house arrest and administrative detention, adding that it had been agreed that only repeat offenders would be punished with house arrest, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
He expressed the committee’s support to the Crime Prevention Law against harshly prosecuting citizens over petty crimes, taking into consideration overarching economic difficulties.
Interior Minister Salameh Hammad said the ministry’s aim is to protect “the law through the law”, pointing to the importance of protecting citizens and the nation while preventing crime.
