House economy committee emphasises importance of Economic Modernisation Vision for Jordan's growth

AMMAN — Head of the Lower House’s Economy and Investment Committee MP Omar Naber on Sunday stressed the importance of implementing the Economic Modernisation Vision (EMV) to boost the Kingdom's economy, create job opportunities and increase exports.

During a committee meeting to discuss the EMV with stakeholders, attendees went over the vision of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply and its affiliated departments, with the participation of Industry Minister Yousef Shamali, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Naber commended Jordanian products reputation, which are often "comparable to developed countries' products".

Shamali said that over 400 members, during several meetings at the Royal Hashemite Court, have developed the EMV, which represents a roadmap for the Ministry of Industry and its departments.

He stressed that the government will not raise the selling price of bread, despite the rise in global wheat prices, saying that the wheat planted in the Kingdom is only sufficient for 10 days.

Shamali reiterated that the ministry annually provides farmers of wheat and barley with seeds, in addition to buying their crops, attributing the lack of demand for cultivating these two materials to water scarcity, and to low farming profitability compared with the high land prices. 

He said that the ministry seeks to address the challenges facing the pharmaceutical industry, adding that 95 to 99 per cent of the sector is run by Jordanian nationals.

Shamali said that the ministry has implemented a project to support the development of e-commerce with the aim of making it an effective tool for streamlining business processes, coordinating efforts in the sector and developing solutions to challenges.
