Hot air mass recedes as fall starts, temperatures drop

AMMAN — The fall season is astronomically forecast to begin on Tuesday when the sun’s rays strike earth perpendicularly to the equator and when the day and night are almost equal, according to the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD).

Head of the JMD’s weather forecast department at the Transport Ministry Raed Al Khattab said that the fall ends on December 21, the first day of the winter solstice.

The fall season has moderate temperatures generally, but can also see quick and severe weather changes, which usually occur from the extension of the Red Sea depression, which in turn results due to the deepening of the Sudanese depression, according to Khattab.

Such weather changes are usually accompanied by heavy rainfall and thunderstorms that cause torrents and speedy wind gusts that raise dust, with changes in temperatures, rising three to five degrees above the annual average and then returning to their normal average or less, he added.

The chance of temperatures being around or less than their annual average stands at 50 per cent, whereas rainfall will be slightly less than its annual average, around 40 to 50 per cent.

Khattab said that this report is a forewarning that details the features of the fall season so as to make early necessary preparations, noting that weather warnings will be issued well in advance prior to their occurrence.

On Monday, the hot air mass impacting the Kingdom is forecast to recede, with temperatures decreasing, bringing regular summer weather in mountainous areas and relatively hot weather in the rest of the Kingdom and north-westerly moderate to brisk winds, according to the JMD.

Temperatures are also forecast to drop further on Tuesday and Wednesday, as the fall weather begins permeating the Kingdom.

In Amman, temperatures on Monday are forecast to reach a high of 33°C during the day and a low of 21°C during the night, while on Tuesday they are forecast to range between 32°C and 21°C.

Temperatures in Aqaba on Monday are forecast to range between 39°C and 26°C, while on Tuesday, mercury levels are expected to reach a high of 38°C during the day and a low of 26°C during the night.
