Grace period for illegal workers ends Wednesday

AMMAN – A grace period granted for illegal guest workers to obtain legal residency permits will end on Wednesday, Labour Ministry Secretary General Hamadah Abu Nejmeh said on Monday.
After that, the ministry’s inspection teams will start intensive campaigns to regulate the Labour market, he said, adding that strict legal measures will be enforced against illegal guest workers and employers if they are proved to be violating the Labour Law.

The Ministry of Labour will not extend the grace period given to illegal guest workers to rectify their status and obtain work and residency permits, according to a government official.
The Ministry of Labour closed down more than 1,000 institutions in violation of the Labour Law during the first half of this year, according to an official statement released Thursday.
The Cabinet on Wednesday gave illegal guest workers a grace period between March 16 and May 15 to rectify their situation and renew their work permits.
