Gov’t issued 3.5% fewer building licences in 2022 — DoS

AMMAN — The total area of licensed buildings in Jordan increased by 3.6 per cent in 2022, going from 8.747 million square metres in 2021, to 9.058 million square metres, the Department of Statistics (DoS) announced on Tuesday.

The department added that the total number of building licences issued in the Kingdom decreased by 3.5 per cent, from the 26,720 licences issued in 2021 to 25,790 licences in 2022, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The area of residential buildings totalled 7.567 million square metres in 2022, registering a drop of 1.5 per cent compared with 7.685 million square metres in 2021, the DoS said.

The DoS stated in its report that the total area of buildings licensed for non-residential purposes increased by 40.4 per cent, from around 1.062 million square metres in 2021 to 1.491 million square metres last year.

Buildings zoned for housing comprised 83.5 per cent of the total area of licensed buildings, according to DoS data.

The central region of the Kingdom accounted for 66 per cent of the total area of licensed buildings, while the north recorded 25.1 per cent and the south 8.9 per cent, according to the DoS.

On a monthly level, data showed that the number of building permits reached 2,128 in December, while the area of licensed buildings reached 803,000 square metres. This marks a decrease of 13.7 per cent compared with the 930,000 square metres registered during the same month of 2021.
