Gov’t ‘committed’ to teachers — Education minister

AMMAN — The government had “met all the provisions” of an agreement signed with the Jordan Teachers Association (JTA), except one item that needs legislative measures, Education Minister Tayseer Nuaimi said on Tuesday.

The government had signed an agreement with the JTA after a strike carried out by the latter at the start of the 2019/2020 academic year.

“While the ministry adopted dialogue when dealing with association’s council, the council continued using dictation and rejection without offering the ministry any proposals,” he said during a press briefing.   

The minister also added that all penalties and judicial measures related to violations committed during the previous strike have been cancelled, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Highlighting that implementing the provisions of the agreement “shows the government’s commitment towards teachers”, he said that all teachers’ allowances were disbursed as of the beginning of this year.

The suspension of the allowances for teachers, civil and military employees came as a result of the pandemic crisis, he said.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to support teachers, in implementation of His Majesty King Abdullah’s directives on empowering teachers and bettering their lives, the minister reiterated that all allowances will be resumed as of the beginning of 2021.
