AMMAN — The Gilgamesh Art Cafe will host their first exhibition including audience participation from September 1 to 30 at the Gilgamesh Art Café in Jabal Luweibdeh.

The event will involve a month-long art exhibition and book fair, alongside workshops that will be curated and led by artists from the Gilgamesh collective. The workshops include sculpture, pottery, painting and writing, according to Arwa Dejaba, the owner of Gilgamesh.

“The last exhibition, hosted from the 4th to the 6th of August, paved the way. It raised awareness,” highlighted author and collective member, Safad Al Safadi, who will run the writing workshop.

The exhibition will have several two-hour sessions every day, with each session to cost JD5, excluding the writing workshop, which is priced at JD3. Additionally, participants are encouraged to take home their finished pieces, said Dejaba.

The workshops are a “mixture of art, culture and freedom in creating, all in an accessible fashion”, said Deema Abu Sharkh, sculptor and collective member, noting that all workshops will be held in Arabic and English.

Participants can “enjoy the exhibition, attend workshops, peruse the book fair and round it all off at the coffee shop for some homemade jam and a cup of coffee”, said Abu Sharkh.

“The gallery [Gilgamesh], among others, gives art the chance of being normalised within the community,” providing a space for people to interact with art accessibly, said Safadi.

Additionally, it “gives a chance to emerging artists”, she added.
