Foreign Ministry follows up on probe into murder of Jordanian woman in Canada

AMMAN — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate on Saturday said it was following up on the murder of a Jordanian woman allegedly by her 37-year-old Jordanian husband in Ottawa, Canada, earlier last week.

The victim, identified by Canadian media outlets as Rania Badran, 46, was found murdered in the Brampton area on Monday, October 2.

Her husband, also identified by the Canadian press as Basel Mohammad, was charged with second-degree murder.

The Canadian media added that the investigation into the death of Badran, who was found with apparent signs of trauma, is ongoing.

“The Jordanian ministry, through the Operation Centre Unit in Amman and the Jordanian embassy in Canada are following up on a case of a Jordanian woman who was murdered by her husband,” according to the ministry’s spokesperson Ambassador Sufian Qudah.

The Canadian authorities arrested the husband, Qudah was quoted as saying in a statement by the ministry that was distributed to the local media.

Qudah stressed that “the Jordanian embassy in Canada is following up on the criminal investigation into the incident that is being conducted by the Canadian authorities”.

The ambassador expressed his condolences to the victim’s family, according to the ministry statement.

The Canadian local media cited a statement by the police calling on anyone with information regarding the homicide to contact investigators.
