Safadi, Belgian counterpart discuss ceasefire, aid for Gaza

AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Monday met with German Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Niels Annen, with talks focusing on strengthening bilateral partnerships and addressing various regional and international issues, especially the Palestinian cause and the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza.

Both ministers also highlighted their countries’ shared commitment to maintaining coordination across diverse sectors, with a particular emphasis on the environment, energy and water sectors.

The discussion also covered the situation in Gaza, focusing on efforts to protect the civilians and ensure the delivery of adequate and sustainable humanitarian aid throughout the war-torn Strip. 

Safadi reiterated the necessity for Israel to adhere to international law and humanitarian principles. He also called for an end to the escalating war against the Strip, as reported by the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

He also commended Germany for its unwavering support to the Kingdom in propelling its development agenda and assisting it in tackling the challenges posed by regional and global issues, including the refugee crisis.

The ministers underscored the crucial role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Safadi also voiced his appreciation for Germany’s substantial support for the agency.

Annen hailed the Kingdom’s efforts in providing humanitarian aid to Gaza and its contributions towards fostering regional stability and peace.

During his regional visit, Annen is set to announce an increase in support to UNRWA, amounting to 15 million euros for the period 2024-2026, which will benefit both Jordan and Lebanon.

He is also scheduled to attend the signing of agreements between the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation and the Ministry of Water, in the presence of representatives from the German Development Bank (KFW).

Also on Monday Safadi and Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib held a telephone conrersation to discuss efforts to cease the Israeli aggression on Gaza and the provision of adequate humanitarian aid to the famine-affected Strip.

Safadi commended Belgium’s call for a ceasefire and its commitment to aid provision. He also hailed Belgium’s support for the Palestinians’ right to freedom. 

Safadi underscored the importance of the initial decision taken by several European countries to recognise the Palestinian state, as reported by the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The ministers also deliberated on the progression of bilateral relations between Jordan and Belgium. They also reaffirmed their mutual commitment to enhance cooperation and coordinate within the framework of the European Union.
