AMMAN — Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Wednesday attended the preparatory meeting on the level of foreign ministers for the 14th Ordinary Session of the Islamic Summit Conference of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, which will be held in Mecca on Friday night.

During the meeting, the draft agenda and action programme of Friday’s summit were discussed and approved, a Foreign Ministry statement said on Thursday.

His Majesty King Abdullah is heading the Jordanian delegation to the Islamic summit in Saudi Arabia.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Safadi held talks with a number of his counterparts over bilateral relations and the latest regional developments, as well as activating joint Arab-Islamic action to confront challenges and serve Islamic causes, according to the statement.

Safadi met with his counterparts Sameh Shoukri of Egypt, Kuwaiti Sheikh Sabah Al Khalid Al Hamad Al Sabah, Turkish Mevlut Cavusoglu, Moroccan Nasser Bourita, Iraqi Mohammad Al Hakim, Saudi Adel Al Jubair, Palestinian Riad Malki, Tunisian Khamis Al Jheinawi, Libyan Mohammad Siala and his peer from Maldives Abdullah Shahid.

Recent developments in the Palestinian cause topped the meetings’ agenda, with Safadi reaffirming the need to focus efforts on supporting the Palestinians and resolving the conflict based on a two-state solution that guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the June 4,1967, lines with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.

In press remarks following the foreign ministers’ talks, Safadi highlighted the importance of the timing of the Islamic and Arab summits, during which the region is facing a number of challenges.

The top diplomat reiterated that the security of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and all Gulf states is an integral part of Jordan’s security, reaffirming the Kingdom’s support against any threats.

Arabs’ stance is clear, he said, they seek regional relations that are built on the principles of good neighbourliness and non-interference in internal affairs, in accordance with the international laws.

Talks also highlighted the centrality of the Palestinian cause, emphasising that the sole path to comprehensive peace is through establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
