AMMAN — Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein on Tuesday reviewed progress made in implementing joint decisions that seek to enhance cooperation in economic, political and defence fields.

The two ministers, during the talks over the phone, stressed that institutionalising cooperation is a sustainable approach, where agreements signed between the two countries “opened wide horizons” to realise integration called for by His Majesty King Abdullah and Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al Kadhimi recently in Amman, according to a ministry statement.

Talks also covered advancement in enhancing the trilateral cooperation with Egypt in implementation of the decisions of the summit that King Abdullah, Prime Minister Kadhimi and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi held recently in Amman.

Hussein acquainted Safadi with the latest development in Iraq and efforts exerted by the government to realise development and enhance security, stability and the rule of law in Iraq.

Safadi stressed that the Kingdom, under King Abdullah's directives, fully supports Iraq and its government's endeavours to overcome all challenges, protect the security and stability of the country and realise the aspirations of Iraqis.

Safadi highlighted the importance of respecting Iraq's sovereignty and joining all efforts to support the Iraqi government, mainly in the fields of enhancing security, stability and the rule of law, “whose success is a success for the entire region” in realising the joint goal of achieving stability and defeating terrorism, read the statement.

The minister said that terrorism is still an existing threat that requires regional and international cooperation to defeat it under the umbrella of the international alliance.

The two ministers highlighted the importance of continuing support to the Iraqi government and the “balance policy” it adopts in its international relations and sparing Iraq the repercussions of regional and global conflicts.

Meanwhile, Hussein said that the Iraqi government is moving ahead with its policy and procedures aimed at combating terrorism and other security threats so as to protect the security of the Iraqi people, national assets and diplomatic missions, the statement said.

The top Iraqi diplomat also praised Amman's stances in supporting Baghdad, agreeing with Safadi to continue consultation and cooperation in all fields.
