FM, DMAS chief discuss ties, region

AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Thursday met with Chair of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with the Mashreq countries (DMAS) Isabel Santos and members of the parliamentary delegation. 

The meeting focused on regional developments as well as cooperation between Jordan and the EU, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

Safadi expressed appreciation for the EU support to Jordan in many sectors, stressing that Jordan views the EU as a strong partner to support the Kingdom’s development process. 

He pointed to the EU-Jordan Association Council and referred to the ongoing negotiations with the EU to agree on the EU-Jordan Partnership Priorities for 2021-2027, highlighting that the Kingdom is looking forward to signing it in the coming period.

Safadi reviewed regional developments, foremost of which is the Palestinian cause, stressing the need to reach a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution, in accordance with international resolutions. 

Safadi underlined the necessity of providing support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). He also stressed the importance of the international conference to be held to support the agency. 

The conference is scheduled for November 16 in Brussels under the co-chairmanship of Jordan and Sweden.

Santos praised Jordan's main role under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah to achieve regional security and stability.

She also lauded the model presented by the Kingdom in its moderate policies, and its important role in hosting refugees. She stressed that Jordan is an important strategic partner of the EU and that work is ongoing to develop cooperation and partnership programmes with the Kingdom.
