AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Monday participated in a meeting marking the 60th anniversary of the first conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), held in the Serbian capital Belgrade.

In a recorded speech, Safadi stressed that the Kingdom is a founding member state of the movement whose principles were inspired by the Bandung Conference in 1955, and was among the 29 participating countries, said a Foreign Ministry statement.

Safadi highlighted the participant countries’ achievements in promoting and maintaining international peace and security, and in voicing out the hopes and aspirations of nearly two-thirds of humanity over the past six decades.

The Jordanian foreign minister underlined that a lasting and just peace cannot be achieved unless the occupation in Palestine is brought to an end, and the Palestinians obtain their right to freedom and an independent state.

He called for the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital, on the lines of June 4, 1967, and on the basis of the two-state solution, in accordance with international resolutions, urging the relaunching of serious negotiations.

Until this peace is materialised, it is imperative to continue providing support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to enable it to provide its vital services to about 5.7 million Palestinian refugees in accordance with its UN mandate, Safadi noted.

He described the responsibility of aiding refugees as an international one, adding that host countries should not shoulder the responsibility of hosting refugees alone.

Safadi noted that the Kingdom is the second largest refugee hosting country compared to its population.

The foreign minister stressed the need to intensify efforts to resolve regional crises and address their repercussions, find political solutions to the crises in Syria, Libya and Yemen and provide assistance to Lebanon.

He also stressed the need for more effective initiatives to counter terrorism and violence and renounce the culture of hatred in all its forms.
