AMMAN — The Criminal Court prosecutor on Saturday levelled multiple manslaughter charges against a man in connection with a brawl that resulted in the death of two people and the injury of four others from the same family in Amman over the weekend.

The suspect, 47, allegedly engaged in gunfire with eight other men, all from the same family, over financial issues in the Abu Alanda neighbourhood on Friday, a senior judicial source said.

“The suspect and the rest of his family members engaged in a heated argument over old financial matters near their shops in an industrial area,” the senior judicial source told The Jordan Times.

All eight men were allegedly armed and “they started shooting at each other”, according to the senior judicial source.

“The gunfire resulted in the death of a 53-year-old man, his 25-year-old son and the injury of four other men,” the senior judicial source added.

Two other suspects escaped following the shooting incident, the senior judicial source said.

Police and crime lab experts retrieved two handguns and an automatic weapon as well as dozens of spent shells from the shooting scene, a second official source said.

Criminal Court Prosecutor Ishaq Abu Awad ordered that the weapons and the spent shells be sent to the crime lab for a ballistic match, the second official source told The Jordan Times.

“Abu Awad is currently questioning the suspect and is expected to level additional charges once the four other suspects are discharged from the hospital,” the second official source said.

A post-mortem report indicated that the father received seven bullets to different parts of his body, while his son received a single fatal bullet that penetrated his lungs and heart, the second official source added.

Abu Awad ordered that the suspect be detained at a correctional and rehabilitation centre for 15 days pending further investigation.
