AMMAN — Heavy snow accumulation and frost caused extensive damage to farms in many parts of the Kingdom, according to Secretary General of the Farmers Union Mahmoud Al Oran.

Oran indicated that the first wave of frost, which mostly affected the Jordan Valley, damaged approximately 30 to 90 per cent of crops, especially open crops like potatoes and courgettes, resulting in a significant price hike.

“Greenhouses witnessed the least damage, but there was a decrease in production,” Oran told The Jordan Times on Sunday over the phone.

Oran demanded immediate compensation for farmers through the Agricultural Risk Fund, which covers weather-related damage.

“The Ministry of Agriculture began to take inventory and assess the damages. We hope that the procedures and compensation happen quickly so that farmers will benefit from the remainder of the season,” he added.

According to Oran, the heavy snowfall occurred mostly at night and affected all areas of the Kingdom. “The farmers already have outstanding debts, reducing their ability to rectify this damage. The increase in snow led to many falling trees and branches,” he added.

The snowstorm also negatively affected livestock, as many lambs and sheep died, along with poultry that need special care, Oran said.

Farmer Ayman Abu Kishek indicated that the low temperatures this year are a first in the Jordan Valley, as they dropped below zero during the growing season.

“Some areas sustained damage of up to 80 per cent. Most of the crops were affected and damaged, which will result in a great price hike,” Abu Kishek told The Jordan Times over the phone.

Abu Kishek expressed hopes that the Agriculture Ministry takes immediate action, not only to compensate farmers, but also to solve underlying issues so they can continue working.
