FAO conducts training on forest fire management in Jordan

AMMAN — The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) on Monday launched a training on the situation of Integrated Forest Fires Management (IFFM).

This training falls within the activities of the “Enhancing the capacity of the forestry sector to control and manage forest fires in Jordan” project that addresses the country’s technical capacity needs in regards to forest fire management, according to a FAO statement.

The objective of the two-day training is to build the national capacities of the Ministry of Agriculture/Forestry Department’s experts and other key stakeholders in forest fire management, law enforcement, and the potential adoption of advanced technologies, such as GIS and remote sensing techniques for forest fire management. 

Nabil Assaf, FAO representative in Jordan said: “This project will improve the sector’s capacity and contribute to the national development process to conserve and sustainably manage Jordan’s forest resources and ecosystems.”

Forest protection is a pillar of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15: “To protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss,”  read the statement.

It also falls under the FAO Strategic Objective 5 to “increase the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises” and FAO Strategic Objective 2 to “make agriculture, forestry and fisheries more productive and sustainable”.
