Exceptionally high scores recorded in first single-session Tawjihi

AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Thursday congratulated Tawjihi (General Secondary Education Certificate Examination) students as the results of the 2018-2019 academic year were announced, with an overall success rate of 58.3 per cent.

In a Tweet via his official account, the King said: "I am filled with happiness today, as you are starting a new phase in your academic and practical life. You are a source of pride for me and for Jordan. You pave the way for the future and by your ardour our homeland will rise and prosper."

This year marks the first time in 16 years for the Tawjihi examination to be held in a single session at the end of the year, instead of two sessions.

The number of subjects required for each student to set for was reduced to seven instead of eight, in order to alleviate the burden on students.

Although the pass rate this year is within its average range compared with previous sessions, this year’s results recorded uncommonly high achievements, with one student pulling off a perfect 100-per cent score and nine others attaining a close 99.9 per cent. 

The number of students who sat for the exam session stood at 133,274, out of whom 77,724 passed, while the total number of students who registered for the session reached 159,194, Minister of Education and Higher Education Walid Maani said in a press conference on Thursday held to announce the results.

The pass rate for academic branches reached 60.5 per cent, with the scientific stream recording a success rate of 71.1 per cent and the literary stream of 52.6 per cent, while the success rate in vocational streams stood at 41.4, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

During the conference at the Queen Rania Centre for Education and Information Technology, Maani honoured the top achievers in all streams. 

Ahead of everyone else, Ahmed Sami Hassan Othman bagged a full mark, scoring 100 per cent in the scientific stream (see story on page 2).
