AMMAN — Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) agents on Monday arrested 11 suspected drug dealers during raids on houses in Sahab and Madaba, the Public Security Department said.

A special AND team arrested eight suspects during a raid on a house in Sahab, after monitoring the premises due to suspicions of drug manufacturing and dealing, a PSD statement said.

A search of the home yielded a stash of illegal contraband and six pieces of various firearms.

Meanwhile in Madaba, AND officers arrested three suspects and seized 1kg of hashish and an automatic rifle during a raid on a house, the PSD said.

All suspects were referred to the State Security Court prosecutor for further questioning and indictment, the PSD added.

In July, AND referred 140 suspects in drug dealing cases to the authorities.

The suspects were involved in 98 cases, the PSD media department said, adding that AND personnel confiscated 1,350kg of marijuana, 32kg of synthetic cannabis, known locally as “joker”, 3,335 narcotic pills and 0.5kg of heroin in the same month.

AND urged the public to cooperate with its personnel, noting that citizens can report suspicious activity via WhatsApp on 0790192833 or by calling 911.

In recent remarks, AND Director Brig. Gen. Anwar Tarawneh stressed that drugs are not manufactured in Jordan, and that the department has the modern technology necessary to detect narcotics.

He said there are only a few cases of people using chemicals to manufacture synthetic cannabis.

In response, AND launched a campaign against materials and substances used to manufacture the drug, he said.
