Court upholds sentence for wife convicted of attempted murder

AMMAN — The Court of Cassation has upheld a Criminal Court ruling sentencing a 56-year-old woman to three years and four months in prison after convicting her of being an accomplice in the attempted murder of her husband in March 2016.

The court first handed the defendant eight years in jail for her role in the attempted murder of her husband on March 15, in one of the southern governorates.

However, the court decided to reduce the sentence by half after the victim dropped charges against his wife.

A second 26-year-old defendant was also standing trial for attempting to murder the victim, who was his uncle, and the defendant received a five-year prison term.

 Court papers said the victim and his wife suffered from marital problems.

“The woman decided to get rid of her husband and asked for the second defendant’s help and he agreed,” court documents said.

 The defendant informed her relative about her husband’s movements and when he usually got home.

On the day of the incident, the court maintained, the defendant headed to the victim’s home and knocked on his door.

“The minute the victim opened the door, the defendant fired several rounds striking him in the neck and head,” court documents added.

The victim’s wife called the ambulance and he was rushed to a nearby hospital and survived the shooting, according to court documents.

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court followed the proper procedures when sentencing the defendant and she deserved the verdict she received.

The Court of Cassation judges were Mohammad Ibrahim, Naji Zu’bi, Bassem Mubeidin, Yassin Abdullat and Hamad Ghzawi.
