AMMAN — The Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) on Sunday launched a programme for improving capabilities of fishermen and monitoring fishing, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The programme, which is part of the strategy of the Regional Organisation for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, aims to enhance monitoring of the environment and marine life and improving the living standards of the local community.
The strategy, funded by World Bank and the Global Environment Facility, will provide the required equipment and expertise to train fishermen and encourage them to fish in deep water, mitigating pressure on shallow-water areas and reefs at the Gulf of Aqaba to preserve the coral reef.
ASEZA Chief Commissioner Nasser Shraideh said that facilitating fishing in deep water with the use of fishing cranes will be studied to reduce efforts of fishers.
