Arab Media Women’s Centre holds 13th conference

AMMAN — The 13th Arab Women Media Conference was held on Saturday under the theme “combating extremism and its impact on women and the role of media”.

Organised by the Arab Media Women’s Centre (AMWC), the event featured discussions by participants from Jordan and several Arab countries on forms of extremism and how the media can influence change.

HRH Princess Basma, who is the honorary chairperson of the AMWC, said despite some shortcomings, Arab media have managed to promote enlightenment and the values of freedom, equality and justice.

She added that the media will continue to lead societies towards tolerance, respect and the renouncement of hatred and violence.

“The Arab media today are countering many decisive issues,” the princess said, adding that journalists are also promoting democracy, social justice and tolerance.

Media outlets are “spreading love and fortifying countries against all the destructive tools”, she noted.

Princess Basma cited the role media professionals can play against the incitement promoted on social media websites.

Established in 1999 under Princess Basma’s directives, the AMWC is a non-governmental organisation specialised in empowering Arab women journalists through training, research and media consultations.

Centre President Mahasin Imam urged Arab media figures to remain committed to the truth and free opinion, away from extremism and sectarian divisions.
