Amman municipality continues crackdown on unlicensed valet services

AMMAN — The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) on Monday said joint teams addressed violations committed by unlicensed valet parking services in the Sweifieh neighbourhood.

The campaign included removing barriers placed on the sides of roads and in front of sidewalks to reserve parking places, a GAM statement quoted Mohammad Faouri, director of joint management at the municipality, as saying. 

Faouri said the campaign is being executed in cooperation with the traffic department, security personnel and related GAM departments, with three winch trucks used to remove booths in unlicensed parking lots.

The crackdown, he noted, will continue on other streets after its “success” on Prince Mohammad, Medina Munawara and Abdullah Ghosheh streets, as well as in Khaldieh and Um Uthaina.

Last week, Faouri called on motorists not to leave their cars with valet parking attendants employed by restaurants or cafés. 

“Many restaurants employ people to provide their customers with valet parking services, but none have obtained an official licence to that end from GAM,” he told The Jordan Times. 

Faouri added that GAM teams, in cooperation with Public Security Department personnel, organise field visits to check on these unlicensed valet parking services, and have referred several people to the administrative governor over the issue.

Also last week, the Criminal Investigation Department warned car owners against unlicensed valet parking attendants.
