Amman Bus project to cover all parts of capital by 2020 — official

AMMAN — The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) will add 151 new buses to its fleet by next year, marking a milestone in the capital’s transport system, according to an official.

"The strategic plan aims at enhancing public transportation and developing legislation and the use of technology in the transport sector through providing 286 buses, which was agreed on after studying quantity demanded," Transport Operation Manager at GAM Khalid Abu Oleim told The Jordan Times on Wednesday.

The first stage of GAM’s “Amman Bus” project started operating at the end of June 2019.

It established 23 routes for 135 buses to serve areas in north and east Amman, such as Sweileh, Jubeiha, Abu Nuseir, Abdali and other areas, the official said.

"Ten weeks have passed since the 135 buses started operating and everything is going well," Abu Oleim added.

The official said the municipality hopes to cover all areas of the capital by 2020.

He noted that the vehicles feature high sanitary standards, e-payment, accessibility for people with disabilities and surveillance cameras.

Amman Vision Transport Company, owned by GAM, operates the buses “to serve Amman residents and not to generate revenue”.
