AMMAN — Al al Bayt University had to suspend classes on Thursday after a brawl on campus left one student injured.
Al al Bayt University President Dia-Eddin Arafah was quoted by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, as saying that the decision to suspend classes was taken after large-scale campus violence erupted with the participation of outsiders who covered their faces.
Arafah added that a 21-year-old student was shot in the shoulder by a stray bullet fired during the brawl, stressing that the university will take strict legal and administrative measures against those involved in the violence.
Mafraq Public Hospital Director Samir Mashaqbeh said first aid was administrated to the injured student, describing his condition as “fair and stable”, Petra reported.
A similar incident of campus violence took place last Thursday at Al al Bayt University, located in Mafraq, some 80 kilometres northeast of Amman, prompting the administration to suspend classes.
No one was injured during last week’s campus brawl but buildings and cars were damaged, according to eyewitnesses.
Later on Thursday, the university expelled 25 students who were involved in the campus violence.
The decision was taken by the university’s administration, upon recommendations of the concerned committees, according to Arafah.
A study published earlier this year by the Jordanian Political Science Association revealed that 296 incidents of violence resulting in seven deaths were registered at public and private universities over the past four years.
