Activists mobilise for global digital storm, urging UN action to halt genocide in Gaza

AMMAN — A group of activists announced on Thursday that they plan to launch a digital storm on Friday asking international organisations to send a letter to UN agencies to halt the genocide in Gaza.

“We aim to call on the international community to send letters to the United Nations Office for the Prevention of Genocide and the High Commissioner for Human Rights to prevent the genocide that is taking place in Gaza,” said Rania Sabbah, one of the Gaza Genocide Petition Team.

Sabbah told The Jordan Times that the group visited multiple UN and international organisations in Jordan over the past few weeks because “we believe they should play a bigger role in halting the genocide in Gaza”.
For this purpose, Sabbah added that her team prepared a letter for these organisations with their demands and concerns.

Part of the letter that will be shared virally on Friday by the team read:

“For the past two months, diplomatic measures to uphold international law and terminate the genocide against the Palestinian people have been conspicuously absent.

The international community's persistent failure to hold Israel accountable for its settler colonialism, illegal occupation, and the protracted closure of Gaza has resulted in a horrifying display of violence, constituting war crimes, crimes against humanity, and incitement to genocide”.

In light of these alarming developments, we urgently demand your organisation's immediate and unequivocal support in drafting and submitting a forceful joint letter to the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, Alice Wairimu Nderitu, the Special Advisor on the Responsibility to Protect, George Okoth-Obbo, and the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Volker Türk, the letter stated.

Furthermore, Sabbah added that the team is building on the movements made by the Palestinian NGOs who are also addressing international organisations urging them to voice their objection and prevent the genocide in Gaza.

Some of the demands for the international community by the Palestinian organisations include acknowledging and publicly recognise that Israel’s conduct in the Gaza Strip is tantamount to an unfolding genocide.
Condemn the genocidal rhetoric of Israeli officials, which has increased in the past weeks, and reminding the international community of the danger such rhetoric carries, was another demand.

The Palestinian organisations also called for condemning the accompanying atrocities committed by Israel in Gaza and the resulting massive loss of civilian life and destruction of civilian infrastructure.

The next step for the Jordanian team, according to Sabbah, is to launch a global digital campaign in the next two weeks.

“We will provide more details about the global campaign in the coming week,” she added.
