Academics, industry experts urge Tawjihi students to consider career prospects when choosing major

AMMAN — Union representatives and university lecturers are advising Tawjihi (the General Secondary Education Certificate Examination) students to pursue majors that open up opportunities in different fields.

Locally, almost all engineering majors are saturated, meaning students should start considering sub-specialties, the Jordan Engineers Association (JEA) Vice President Fawzi Masad told The Jordan Times on Monday.

“Current in-demand majors are related in some way to engineering, such as cybersecurity, computer science and specialties related to artificial intelligence,” according to Masad, who noted that software engineering is the fastest-growing engineering field.

Currently, there are over 190,000 engineers registered with the JEA, he added.

Sociologist and professor Hussein Al Khozahe told The Jordan Times that the current job market is competitive, and most majors are becoming saturated and stagnant. This means that applying for specialties that would enable work in different fields and industries is “a positive way of thinking”, he said. 

According to Khozahe the most important factor is that students “consider their education and career goals before choosing any major”.

When choosing a university specialty, the student should pay attention to whether or not it comes with abundant employment prospects, he added.

Associate Professor Duaa Eid told The Jordan Times that “the most fruitful majors nowadays are those that use technology, because our world is increasingly becoming reliant on technological advancements”.

Eid cited software and application development, along with several other specialties, as examples of technology-focused specialties.


The spokesperson for the Ministry of Higher Education, Muhannad Khatib, recently told The Jordan Times that stagnant and overloaded university majors include: Business administration, humanitarian and management disciplines and engineering specialties.
