AMMAN — Seven policemen on Tuesday sustained moderate injuries in a stone pelting incident in the southern governorate of Karak, according to an official source. Police beefed up security in Karak's Marj region after a gathering “attempted to damage public property and blocked streets”, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported quoting the official source as saying.
Police used tear gas to disperse the gathering that pelted stones at police and violated public health regulations, the source added. The gathering was organised to call for the release of members of the now-suspended Jordan Teachers Association (JTA) council, according to Petra.
On July 25, Amman Attorney General Hassan Abdallat suspended the members of the JTA council, members of its central body, branches and administrations from service and ordered the closure of the syndicate and its branches for two years over criminal and corruption charges. Thirteen accused, all members of the JTA, were ordered detained for one week at a correctional and rehabilitation centre pending further investigation.
