AMMAN — Police in Irbid, 80km north of the capital, were questioning a 49-year-old man on Tuesday who allegedly stabbed and killed his Syrian wife at their home on Saturday night, official sources said.
The husband took his 31-year-old wife to the emergency unit at a nearby hospital, suffering from a stab wound to the chest, a senior official source said.
“The woman was pronounced dead on arrival,” the source told The Jordan Times.
The husband had claimed that his wife fell on a knife and hurt herself, but hospital officials, who noticed bruises on his arms, were suspicious of his story and contacted police and forensic detectives, the source added.
Pathologist Ali Shotar, who examined the body, concluded that the wounds did not corroborate the suspect’s story, according to a second source.
The husband was summoned for questioning and reportedly confessed to stabbing his wife, the second source said.
Police refused to reveal the motive behind the incident and said that they are still questioning the husband and other family members, the second source added.
The victim is also survived by an 18-month-old daughter, the source added.
