AMMAN — The Social Development Ministry on Saturday presented 35 underprivileged families with keys of  housing units out of 94 in the central region, while the second batch for the northern and southern regions will be distributed soon, the Jordan News Agency, Petra reported.

During the ceremony, Social Development Minister Hala Lattouf said that the ministry is exerting "exceptional efforts" to develop, strengthen and sustain its programmes for the maintenance and construction of vulnerable families' homes.

Lattouf pointed out that, since the launch of the programme in 2002, 1,700 families have benefited, out of the 6,000 who are on the waiting list.

Programme director and assistant secretary general for management and development, Issam Shraideh, said that the ministry will also assist the beneficiaries with in-kind aid to help them settle.

The priority for granting housing for underpriveleged families depends on their economic, social and health factors in addition to taking into consideration the special needs of women and children.

Following the event, Lattouf listened to demands of the families who received the keys of their houses, among them were electricity and water connections.

The families also complained about the suspended financial aid while others said that the aid was not enough to meet their needs, according to Petra.
