AMMAN — Authorities in Irbid arrested three men in connection with the stabbing death of a young man following a brawl on Sunday night, official sources said.

The victim was reportedly stabbed following a brawl with his relatives outside their house, Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.

“Police were dispatched to the area and arrested several people,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was declared dead on arrival, the police official said.

A senior official source told The Jordan Times the authorities arrested three people and seized a knife that was found at the scene of the brawl.

The knife was sent to the Public Security Directorate’s Forensic Laboratories Department for further analysis, the senior official source said.

According to the source, the victim and the suspects had old feuds, and would fight occasionally.

A team of government pathologists, headed by Ali Shotar, performed the autopsy on the victim at the Irbid National Institute of Forensic Medicine, a senior medical source said.

“The victim died of a single stab wound to the heart,” the senior medical source told The Jordan Times.

The senior official source said that the three men were detained at a correctional and rehabilitation centre pending further investigation.

The Criminal Court prosecutor has summoned several witnesses who were in the area at the time of the incident to identify the main perpetrator, the senior official source said.

Investigators are hopeful that “DNA evidence taken from the knife allegedly used in the stabbing will help investigators pinpoint the person who stabbed the young man”, the source said.

According to police, investigations into the incident are ongoing.
