2nd Local Conference of Youth: Climate change kicks off

AMMAN — Activities of the second Local Conference of Youth (LCoY) on climate change kicked off in Amman on Wednesday, in the presence of Minister of Youth, Mohammad Nabulsi, and Environment Minister, Muawieh Radaideh.

The event was organised in partnership between the youth and environment ministries, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) office in Jordan and Generations for Peace, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

According to a joint statement issued by the youth and environment ministries, the event aims to raise societal awareness on climate change and involve young people in finding possible solutions to address its related challenges.

Under the umbrella of YOUNGO, the official youth constituency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the conference provided an opportunity to some 100 young men and women interested in climate action to exchange views and discussions with climate experts, and then present their own proposals and solutions to local and international decision-makers, the statement said.

LCoY is a starting point for the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27), which is scheduled to be held next month in Egypt.

The two-day conference includes several focal points focusing on the impact of climate change on Jordan's youth, and related youth-led action.

The activities also include a panel discussion on climate education and youth engagement, an interactive session titled "Climate Change - Current Global Situation and Efforts to Mitigate and Adapt," as well as workshops on related challenges, policy development and climate advocacy.
