AMMAN — Border Guards received 296 Syrian refugees over the past 72 hours, the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army said on Sunday in a statement carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

Border troops provided the new arrivals with humanitarian assistance and made the arrangements to transfer them to official camps.

The Zaatari, located some 90km northeast of Amman, is Jordan's major camp for Syrian refugees.

It is currently home to 79,559 refugees, according to the latest UNHCR figures.

Last year, Border Guards received a total of 16,997 Syrian refugees, offering them the necessary assistance and transporting them to camps, according to official army figures.
