214 red light running violations recorded in span of 24 hours — CTD

AMMAN — A total of 214 red light running violations were recorded in the past 24 hours, the Central Traffic Department (CTD) announced on Saturday.

Although the violations did not cause any accidents, the CTD said on its Facebook page that this violation “is a crime committed by motorists against themselves and others who use the roads”.

In a post on the CTD page, Fayez Mansour called on the authorities to seize the violator’s driving licence and vehicle “for at least one month”.

Naser Jalal added: “I am for increasing the fine and punishment for violators.”

According to statistics from the Public Security Directorate for the year 2022, there were 174 red light running violations, resulting in two deaths and eight serious injuries.

The Cabinet recently approved amendments to the 2008 Traffic Law which stiffened fines and introduced stricter measures against violators.

Running a red light in the draft law will result in imprisonment for one to two months and a fine of between JD200 and JD300. In case of repeat offences within the span of one year, the penalty will be doubled.

Last year, Jordan witnessed over 170,000 road accidents, resulting in 562 deaths, according to traffic officials.

In 2021, around 160,000 road accidents occurred on the Kingdom’s roads resulting in 589 deaths.

In addition, 11,241 people were injured, including 737 with serious injuries, as a result of the traffic accidents in 2021.

Traffic officials pledged recently to beef up road monitoring on the Kingdom’s roads by increasing the number of traffic patrols and officers roaming the streets.

The traffic department also vowed to spread more secret police on the roads, increasing CCTV road surveillance and following up on social media platforms that report road violations.

Last year, traffic officials announced that the CTD will adopt several measures to curb road accidents including the reinforcement of the Traffic Point System that was published in the Official Gazette in early 2018.
