2023 CPI shows 2.08 increase: Notable contributors include fuel, electricity, cultural entertainment

AMMAN — The general Consumer Price Index (CPI), a measure of inflation, for the year 2023 increased by 2.08 per cent, reaching 109.02 compared with 106.79 for the same period in 2022, the Department of Statistics (DoS) announced on Friday.

In its monthly bulletin, the DoS noted that the main contributors to the rise in the CPI for 2023 compared with 2022 were  fuel and electricity by 5.76 per cent, yoghurt and eggs by 5.70 per cent, personal luggage by 4.94 per cent, culture and entertainment by 4.37 per cent, and rents by 4.10 per cent, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The vegetables, pulses, and canned Goods sub group contributed to reducing the increase in the CPI by 7.88 per cent, followed by clothing by 1.01 per cent, fruits and nuts by 0.83 per cent, and beverages by 0.76 per cent.

According to the report, the CPI in December increased by 1.64 per cent, reaching 109.82 compared with 108.05 for the same month in 2022. 

The department also highlighted that water and sanitation contributed to the increase in the CPI by 7.34 per cent, personal luggage by 6.49 per cent, union contributions by 5.86 per cent, tobacco and cigarettes by 5.21 per cent, and meat and poultry by 4.70 per cent.
