AMMAN — The winter of 2020-2021 is forecast to be colder than usual, with varying amounts of rainfall and a high chance of snowfall in the capital, according to Arabiaweather’s long-term forecast studies for the season.

The preparation of the forecasts depends on various factors, including the behaviour of the atmosphere in the northern half of the earth during the past six months and the temperature changes in different water surfaces in the world, Arabiaweather said.

The weather forecasting entity noted that it operated its own developed applications on superb-performance computers to obtain the most similar data from past years compared with this year, and obtained seasonal forecasts based on analysed data that provides insight into the general weather conditions expected to occur in the upcoming several months.

However, Arabiaweather warned that the seasonal forecasts are less detailed than daily comprehensive updates, which are regularly updated every month, and the former’s accuracy is not as high either. It also partakes in global research to improve the accuracy of seasonal forecasts.

The seasonal forecasts’ usefulness lies in helping different sectors to prepare ahead for winter, especially the agricultural sector, which builds its plans based on such indicators.

A cold air mass began impacting the Kingdom on Wednesday night, bringing rainfall around the Kingdom during night and heavy rains with foggy weather on Thursday morning. The cold air mass and unstable weather conditions are forecast to last until Saturday evening.
