AMMAN — Police on Thursday said that two suspects were arrested in connection with the alleged robbery of a delivery driver on Wednesday.
The delivery driver complained to police on Wednesday that he was “threatened and robbed by an unknown person while in the process of delivering a package”, Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.
“The driver told investigators that the suspect snatched his personal computer and took off to an unknown destination,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.
The police official added that following thorough investigations “investigators were able to arrest the suspect and another man who was with him at the time of the alleged robbery”.
Sartawi added that both suspects are being questioned over the alleged incident.
In January, lawyers said that relevant courts were inflicting stiff punishments against robbers and aggravated assaults, especially assault incidents against delivery drivers.
In some instances, lawyers told The Jordan Times in recent interviews, that the courts were passing the maximum punishment against theft and assault perpetrators, which could reach 15 years in prison.
The Kingdom has witnessed several robberies and physical harm against delivery drivers during 2022 and last year.
In November 2021, a delivery driver was viciously attacked by several suspects in the Marj Al Hammam area in Amman.
The victim was also assaulted with a sharp object that caused deep wounds to his fingers.
Police then announced that they rounded up several suspects in connection with the assault.
According to Public Security Directorate (PSD) statistics in 2020, the number of aggravated assaults that occurred in the Kingdom was 658.
Meanwhile, the reported criminal and misdemeanour thefts for the same year totalled 10,953, according to the PSD statistics.
