AMMAN — The Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) on Sunday announced the arrest of 10 alleged drug smugglers and dealers over the past two weeks.

In addition, 12 drug abusers were arrested in various governorates during the same period, a senior official told The Jordan Times on condition of anonymity.

“We conducted dozens of operations against drug dealers and drug abusers in various governorates based on tips that we received and close monitoring of certain individuals,” the official said.

Illegal narcotics seized during the operations included 342,000 Captagon pills, 12 kilogrammes of hashish and seven weapons, according to a police report distributed to the press on Sunday.

“No one was injured in our raids, which mainly targeted the houses of suspects,” the official source explained, adding that most of the suspects were referred to the State Security Court prosecutor for further questioning.

“Our investigators are questioning a few individuals to determine if they have accomplices or acted alone,” the source said, noting that the bulk of the illegal narcotics were destined for Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

“We will continue our fight against illegal drugs and we commend citizens who helped us in some of these cases,” the official said.

He urged the public to call 911 to provide any tips that would “help us in the fight against illegal drugs”.
