The importance of studying psychology

Dec 06,2018 - Last updated at Dec 06,2018

The simplest definition of psychology is the study of people's behaviour, performance and mental processes.

Psychology allows us to understand more about how the mind and body work together. This knowledge can be useful with decision making and avoiding stressful situations.

This science is necessary to build self-confidence. By understanding more about your personality, you can gain more self-confidence. You will learn more about your weaknesses and can build on them.

Moreover, psychology is important to enriching careers. It will increase your ability to understand your coworkers more and stand a better chance of building friendships. Studying psychology can also give you greater insight into mental illness.

While you might not be interested in becoming a psychotherapist, studying psychology can help you better understand how psychological conditions are diagnosed and treated. You will be able to discover how mental wellness can be enhanced, how to reduce stress, how to boost memory and how to live a happier, healthier life.

It develops your critical thinking. A great deal of psychological content, and the methods taught and used by psychologists, focus on how to think critically. Psychology courses develop the critical thinking skills that are important in business, law and other professions.

Finally, psychology gives you a strong grasp of research method. Psychology as a social science relies on the scientific method. Having a basic understanding of psychological research methods can help you rate some of the many claims that you will encounter in books, magazines, television shows and movies. Becoming a better-informed consumer of psychology means that you will be equipped to sort out truth from fiction surrounding many pop psychology myths.
